A board designed to replace the three multi-section capacitors found within the audio chassis of the AMPEX 440A and 440B tape recorders.
Description
This board is designed to replace all three multi-section capacitors found within the audio chassis of the AMPEX 440A and 440B tape recorders.
These will not work for the 440C! We offer another board specifically for the C version.
Installation of the board is straight forward and none of the original resistors or diodes need to be reused. The board incorporates both the capacitors and these other passive components, keeping everything neat and tidy.
To install:
- Cut the wires that go to the original caps and remove the bracket/cap assembly from the chassis. This is also a good time to strip and tin the ends of the wires.
- Cut off the resistors and diodes, and remove the original multi-section caps by breaking the twist tabs.
- With the replacement board unpopulated, lay it against the bottom face of the bracket. Line up the circular outlines with the holes in the bracket. Mark and drill the three mounting holes for #6 bolts.
- Install 6-32 bolts with nuts. These will act as studs to mount the board to, with the nuts spacing the board off of the bracket. We recommend using lock washers to ensure good connection from the board ground to the chassis.
- Populate the boards: capacitors go on the top side and will poke through the existing holes on the bracket, while the rest of the components will be mounted on the bottom side that faces the bottom panel.
- Fasten the board to the studs, then reinstall the bracket into the chassis.
- Attach and solder the wires. The board has the wire colours silkscreened near each solder pad.
Photos are provided above that show a completed installation in a 440B.
